New Science Librarian started December 2, 2013

  Andrea L. Dinkelman joined the University Libraries on December 2, 2013 as Associate Professor and Science Librarian.  She received her M.S. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2003, Doctor of Pharmacy in 1991 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and a B.S. in Biology in 1984 from Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Previous to her joining the faculty at UNL, Dinkelman was a member of the faculty at the Iowa State University Library from 2003 to November 2013. She provided reference, instruction and collection development support for several science departments including the Departments of Animal Science; Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology; Genetics, Development and Cell Biology; and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dinkelman has published research in several journals including the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education; Issues in Science & Technology Librarianship; and the Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education.

Dinkelman will serve as the liaison to the Food Science and Technology Department and the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and will work with faculty in those areas to support research by providing instruction and reference services. Dinkelman looks forward to meeting and working with faculty in her liaison areas and to assist with course related instruction.

New Interim Engineering Librarian appointed

The UNL Libraries announced December 16, 2013 that Ted E. Naylor was appointed Interim Engineering Librarian and started on December 1, 2013.  In his role he will be liaison to the College of Engineering and all of its units from Architectural Engineering to Mechanical Engineering. Naylor has worked for the UNL Libraries since January 2006 in the position of Special Projects Librarian and was responsible for projects assigned to him by the Dean of Libraries, including reviewing, negotiating, and completing vendor license agreements, the assessment of the Engineering Library, and evaluating policies for digitization projects.

Before joining UNL, Naylor worked as the Interlibrary Loan Librarian at both the Wichita State University in Kansas from 1993-2005, and the Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas from 1989-1992. Naylor received his Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Oklahoma and his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Oklahoma State University.

Naylor says his main focus will be working with Engineering faculty and students to help evaluate the Engineering Library’s print collection to prioritize high-use materials to stay on site and move low-use materials to the LDRF or satellite storage. 

“I will also be working with faculty to determine what they need from an Engineering Librarian in terms of reference, instruction, and assistance with research,” explains Naylor.

Meet the New Guy in Town

He raised Giant African Snails while living in Taiwan, collects plasma globes and lava lamps, plays minecraft on a daily basis and likes to hunt ghosts. 

Meet Will Dooling, UNL Libraries newest reference instruction associate (RIS) at the Love Library.  His favorite thing about working at the library is helping people and teaching people how to do things, because as a librarian he teaches new things every day.  His least favorite thing about working at the library is the perception that people have about librarians, that they’re quiet and nerdy.

“I’m too loud and too outgoing, but I am a nerd,” Dooling said.

Dooling recently started a twitter account @unlnewguy.  “I think people should follow me because I am funny, and because they can learn what’s happening in the library in a different way, where a student would care about it, where it’s coming from a younger perspective,” Dooling said. 

On twitter lately, Dooling has enjoyed playing along with memes and posting on the topic, “add a word, ruin a movie.”

Other things Dooling is interested in are Ancient History, philosophy and Science; he used to work as a Science teacher in Taiwan for two years.  When he was in Taiwan he raised Giant African Land Snails that are about the size of a mouse (no that wasn’t a joke).  As said earlier, Dooling also enjoys collecting plasma globes and lava lamps, online gaming (mainly minecraft), and super natural stuff like ghost hunting.  In fact, he just recently got into contact with a ghost hunting group in Lincoln.

“I would appreciate a student that knows any supernatural stuff, like psychics or UFO sightings, tweet anything like that @unlnewguy,” Dooling said.

Liz Lorang, new Digital Humanities Projects Librarian

On July 1, Liz Lorang, Research Assistant Professor, started in the new position of Digital Humanities Projects Librarian.  The position entails working with other librarians to identify students working on digital research projects, helping students develop their digital scholarship, teaching in the Digital Humanities Graduate Certificate program, and continuing as Senior Associate Editor on the Walt Whitman Archive.

Lorang says the responsibilities involve consulting and connecting with faculty and students. She is excited to work directly with graduate and undergraduate students to help them showcase the great work they are producing.  In the spring she expects to teach the Internship course for the graduate certificate program.  Lorang has a twitter feed and you can follow her: @bettylorang
