Open Forums on East Campus about C.Y. Thompson Library

We are offering forums for faculty, staff, and students to learn about the future upgrades to East Campus' C.Y. Thompson Library. Nancy Busch, dean of libraries, will the conversations. All are welcome.

Engineering Library Ready to Show off Improvements

We would like to welcome all of you to stop by the Engineering Library for our open house on Thursday, November 7, from 2:00-4:00 pm.  We are celebrating the Library’s transformation and welcoming the new Engineering Student Services Center.  The Engineering Library is located in Nebraska Hall W204.  Refreshments will be served.

Upgrades in the Link

As part of renovation and enhanced services, the old help desks in the Link are being replaced with new, cool furniture. During break (Oct. 21-22), the current counter and desk will be removed. The new furniture, which arrives in November, will be more mobile, approachable and functional for working with students. Until November and the new furniture arrives, Libraries staff will be using some of the Talk Zone furniture. Below is a photo of the type of new furniture that will arrive in November.

New E-Book Database Added

New IT e-books added!

 Safari Books Online is an e-book database that updates software guides for developers as well as users.   All of these books offered on this database are types of books in high demand.  Database is updated weekly, with the latest editions to keep up with constantly changing technology.  The collection of most current editions of nearly 8,000 IT-related titles covers topics such as computer programming, languages, databases, software and hardware, gaming, applications, and more.

Meet the New Guy in Town

He raised Giant African Snails while living in Taiwan, collects plasma globes and lava lamps, plays minecraft on a daily basis and likes to hunt ghosts. 

Meet Will Dooling, UNL Libraries newest reference instruction associate (RIS) at the Love Library.  His favorite thing about working at the library is helping people and teaching people how to do things, because as a librarian he teaches new things every day.  His least favorite thing about working at the library is the perception that people have about librarians, that they’re quiet and nerdy.

“I’m too loud and too outgoing, but I am a nerd,” Dooling said.

Dooling recently started a twitter account @unlnewguy.  “I think people should follow me because I am funny, and because they can learn what’s happening in the library in a different way, where a student would care about it, where it’s coming from a younger perspective,” Dooling said. 

On twitter lately, Dooling has enjoyed playing along with memes and posting on the topic, “add a word, ruin a movie.”

Other things Dooling is interested in are Ancient History, philosophy and Science; he used to work as a Science teacher in Taiwan for two years.  When he was in Taiwan he raised Giant African Land Snails that are about the size of a mouse (no that wasn’t a joke).  As said earlier, Dooling also enjoys collecting plasma globes and lava lamps, online gaming (mainly minecraft), and super natural stuff like ghost hunting.  In fact, he just recently got into contact with a ghost hunting group in Lincoln.

“I would appreciate a student that knows any supernatural stuff, like psychics or UFO sightings, tweet anything like that @unlnewguy,” Dooling said.

Snacks provided during mid-terms week

Not only are therapy dogs in the library for you to play with during mid-terms week but Love Library is also giving out coffee and snacks.

The Dean’s Office in the library is sponsoring coffee, granola bars, tea, hot cocoa and possibly cookies.  All of this will take place in the Talk Zone of Love Library South, Oct. 14-16 at 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. (not all day).

So if you’re busy studying, do all of it at the library while drinking some caffeine and eating granola bars.

Bibliography on the Ogallala Aquifer wins award

The Geoscience Information Society Best Paper Award Committee has selected "The Ogallala Aquifer in Nebraska: Gray Literature (1891-2010)" by Adonna Fleming, Leslie M. Delserone and Elaine Nowick for this year's Best Paper Award. It was published in 2012 in volume 13 of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Information. The members of the committee found it to be a very timely discussion of the issues involved in compiling an Ogallala Aquifer bibliography and especially of the importance of gray literature to the topic and its lack of representation in the library and digital information worlds. This paper highlights a specific gap in environmental information, but it is a common problem for researchers in a variety of subjects and it deserves more attention by the information community.

Come to Love Library October 14-16 to meet some very special dogs.  The dogs and their human team members are volunteers from Healing Hearts Therapy Dogs. As certified therapy dogs, they must pass personality and obedience tests, love people, and remain calm around large groups of people in many different settings.

Happenings in the Engineering Library

The Engineering library is full of many perks.  Today marked the highly anticipated return of free, freshly made popcorn on Wednesdays.  They also offer free BYOM (bring your own mug) coffee in the mornings Monday-Friday.  But that’s not all, the engineering library’s microwave is also back in business. 

Besides going there for just the free popcorn and coffee, you can sit down and study in their three new study rooms that are now open north of the library.  They are open on a first come, first serve basis.

Lastly, the clutter in the Engineering library is finally going to be put away.  Their new Library Services desk has been installed and will soon be put to use.  This means that everything will finally be put back in to its rightful place and that we will see the engineering library back in order soon.
