New Times, New Roles, New Structures – Presentation on April 7

The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries invites members of the campus to attend its 2015 Visiting Scholar lecture on April 7, at 10:30 a.m., in the Georgian Room, of the Nebraska Union. The lecture will be given by Trevor A. Dawes, associate university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, and past president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), who will discuss the new and expanded roles that librarians are assuming. In addition there will be a panel discussion from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Love Library, Room 110. Trevor Dawes, along with several Nebraska academic librarians, will discuss recent changes that have taken place at their libraries.

 

Dawes will talk about the ARL study, Transforming Liaison Roles in Research Libraries (2013) (http://www.arl.org/publications-resources/2893-new-roles-for-new-times-transforming-liaison-roles-in-research-libraries#.VOzb9Y3wuUk), which indicates changes in the role of the liaison librarian from someone who develops the collection, staffs a reference desk, and conducts instruction sessions, to a role that meets the changing needs of faculty and students in an academic environment.

As Associate University Librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, Dawes is responsible for research services, scholarly communications, collections and acquisitions, and preservation. Prior appointments include Circulation Services Director at Princeton University Library and positions at Columbia University Libraries in New York City. He has authored, co-authored, or edited several books and articles on a variety of topics in connection with academic libraries. Dawes also serves as an instructor for the MSLIS program at the iSchool at Drexel University. Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers University and has two additional Master’s Degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Update on Learning Commons Construction

Current work being done on the Learning Commons construction includes framing of the study rooms, furniture selection bid documentation, and the coffee RFP. When the weather improves, work on the terrace and replacing the windows will begin.  UNL's Learning Commons will add 700 seats inside and 350 seats outside on the terrace.  To learn more visit: http://libraries.unl.edu/learningcommons

Midterm Snacks (March 9-11)

Monday through Wednesday (March 9-11) all library branches will have snacks and beverages available for midterms. 

Love Library will replenish their snacks Monday through Wednesday at 9 a.m. and around 4 p.m. and other branches will vary on times.

SciPop Talks!: March Madness: Bracketology of Women’s Basketball

Jeff Griesch, Director of Media Relations Operations, UNL Athletics

Griesch, who enters his 16th season as a radio color commentator for Nebraska women's basketball, and hosts Coach Yori's segment on the N-Side Nebraska Show, will talk about the possible seeds in the various brackets of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. Bracketology incorporates some method of predicting what the NCAA Selection Committee will use as its Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) in order to determine at-large (non-conference winning) teams to complete the field of 64 teams, and, to seed the field by ranking all teams from first through sixty-fourth.

Genealogy over Lunch: DNA & GEDmatch

At the next Genealogy over Lunch we will learn about GEDmatch, a website where DNA results can be shared for additional matching to potential cousins and genetic relatives. More discussion will take place about how to use DNA as a genealogical tool.
