“Grantseeking Basics” and “Introduction to Finding Funders”

Love Library at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will host a free workshop on grantseeking for nonprofit organizations on Tuesday, October 28th from 10:00am to 12:00pm in Love Library, Room 110.  The sessions will be led by Kief Schladweiler, Funding Information Network Services Specialist with the Foundation Center (http://foundationcenter.org).  Mr. Schladweiler will highlight the electronic and print resources available for your free use at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s Love Library, a Funding Information Network partner of the Foundation Center.

Grantseeking Basics
Gain an introduction to the world of foundation fundraising.  Are you a representative of a nonprofit organization?  New to fundraising? Do you want to learn how the funding research process works, and what tools and resources are available?  Learn how to become a better grantseeker! We will cover: what you need to have in place before you seek a grant; the world of grantmakers; the grantseeking process; and available tools and resources.

Introduction to Finding Funders
This session provides an introduction to the Foundation Center's comprehensive online database, Foundation Directory Online Professional. Learn how to create customized searches to develop targeted lists of foundations that will match your organization's funding needs. We will spend time exploring Power Search, which allows you to search across nine Foundation Center databases – grantmakers, grants, companies, 990s, news, jobs, RFPs, nonprofit literature, and IssueLab reports.

Save a Place for Yourself
Please come if you can and bring friends and associates.

Open Access Week 2014 -- October 20-26, 2014

UNL Libraries support Open Access

Open Access Vouchers
Since 2013 UNL Libraries have enabled the open access publication of 15 articles by three UNL professors through the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) Gold for Gold program which provides vouchers on an annual basis which can be used for open access article fees. The number of vouchers available is based on UNL’s subscription to RSC journals. Vouchers are freely available on a first come first serve basis to all individuals affiliated with UNL who are publishing in a Royal Society of Chemistry journal. To request a voucher please email Kiyomi Deards at kdeards2@unl.edu no later December 22nd.

Digital Commons
UNL’s institutional repository has been offering open access to the research done by UNL’s faculty and staff since 2005.  Content from the Digital Commons is searchable by Google and averages more than six (6) million downloads per year from readers around the world.  The Digital Commons contains more than 60,000 articles, papers, e-books, documents, presentations, creative activities, master's theses, and open-access dissertations. It also contains Peer-Reviewed Journals and Series and UNL Dissertations from ProQuest-UMI featuring more than 13,000 Ph.D. dissertations from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Content from the Digital Commons is searchable by Google and averages more than six (6) million downloads per year from readers around the world.  Bibliometric studies indicate a 25% to 400% citation advantage for articles published under open access licenses. See B. Wagner, "Open Access Citation Advantage: An Annotated Bibliography," Issues in Science and Technology Librarianship 60 (2010);  http://www.istl.org/10-winter/article2.html

Showcasing Library Collections with Digital Displays

The UNL Libraries collections are so vast that we have started Digital Displays to showcase around 10 books on a small subject so that you can start to see some of the things we have in our collection.
Two digital displays have been made so far, one about  J.R.R. Tolkien and the other is about the 2007-2008 financial collapse.

If you would like to visit either of these digital displays, visit:
2007-2008 Financial Collapse: http://unl.libguides.com/c.php?g=144362

Follow our blog and our twitter @unl_lib to find out information on more digital displays in the future.

Campaign Finance and Election Spending: 10/8

Want to learn how to research and track big spenders influencing elections near you? Attend this workshop on October 8 at 7 p.m. in Room 111 of Love Library.  Get a brief overview of election law and how it has changed due to recent supreme court decisions, a look at how nonprofits and donors can influence an election, and an introduction to the best resources for tracking both disclosed  and undisclosed spending by political campaigns and “outside spending groups” that influence campaigns on behalf of particular politicians.

Copyright, Fair Use and Author's Rights: 10/8

Join us on October 8, 12 p.m. in Room 12 of C.Y. Thompson Library to learn about copyright, fair use and Author's Rights.  Copyright is a battlefield, and an author's control over his/her own work can easily become collateral damage or go missing in action. Many publishers believe they have an inherent right to own the intellectual property arising from your grant-funded research and to live off the earnings of written works that you had little choice but to give them for free or pay them to publish.

UNL Yearbooks are now Searchable

Since last spring, many volunteer students and alumni have been going to the website, “Transcribe Our Past,” http://transcribe.unl.edu to type the contents of UNL Yearbooks and make them searchable.  The site giving people digital access to our yearbooks, now features 26 yearbooks that we can search at full-text.

To see the yearbooks that have been finished, you can go to: http://yearbooks.unl.edu. The work is still ongoing, 21,000 out of 35,000 pages have been completed and we would love your help transcribing the remaining pages so this project can be finished.
